New GS1 Data Model Changes for DIY and Garden & Pet May 16th

On May 16, the updated GS1 data model for the DIY, Garden & Pet sectors will go live. This release introduces several important changes affecting data submission and validation within the GS1 data pool. Below is an overview of the key updates.

New GS1 Data Model Changes for DIY and Garden & Pet May 16th

Key Changes in Version 3.1.35

Updated Recupel and Ecotrel Code Lists

As part of the annual maintenance cycle, the code lists used for capturing Recupel and Ecotrel information have been updated. These changes help organizations comply with the latest environmental and recycling reporting requirements, particularly for the Belgian market.

Expansion of Hazardous Substance Information

The data model now includes expanded code lists for hazardous substances, as well as a new attribute to capture the physical state of products. This provides greater accuracy in product safety and compliance data and improves communication throughout the supply chain.

Support for Unit Price Comparison

New attributes have been added to support price comparison based on fixed units, such as per liter or per kilogram. This functionality improves transparency for retailers and consumers and supports compliance with pricing regulations.

Sustainability Program Code Replaces Repairability Index

The temporary “Repairability Index” attribute has been replaced by the international “Sustainability Program Code” attribute for the Belgian target market. This change aligns the GS1 Benelux model more closely with international sustainability standards and reporting practices.

Improved Packaging Definitions for Green Score Calculations

Several definitions and instructions related to packaging registration have been clarified to improve Green Score calculations. It is now more clearly defined when values such as “Recycled” and “Bio plastic” may be used, helping organizations avoid inconsistent or incorrect sustainability claims.

Activation of New GPC Bricks

Additional GPC bricks have been activated for several new product categories, including:

  • Chisel and gouge assortments
  • Protective covers for lawn and garden
  • Trackers
  • Medicine cabinets
  • Water toys

These additions allow products to be classified more accurately and improve data quality across retail channels and datapools.

Why This Matters

The latest GS1 Benelux update reflects the growing importance of high-quality, standardized product data within retail and e-commerce. Sustainability reporting, regulatory compliance, and accurate product classification are becoming increasingly critical for efficient collaboration between suppliers, retailers, marketplaces, and consumers.

Organizations that proactively align their product data with the new requirements can benefit from:

  • Improved data quality
  • Faster onboarding with retailers
  • Better compliance with sustainability and regulatory requirements
  • More efficient publication processes
  • Reduced risk of data validation errors and rejected publications
