The need for digital collaboration and standardisation in packaging data following Empack 2026
Empack 2026 made one thing very clear: getting a grip on packaging data is no longer a nice-to-have, it’s a must.
On May 16, the updated GS1 data model for the DIY, Garden & Pet sectors will go live. This release introduces several important changes affecting data submission and validation within the GS1 data pool. Below is an overview of the key updates.

As part of the annual maintenance cycle, the code lists used for capturing Recupel and Ecotrel information have been updated. These changes help organizations comply with the latest environmental and recycling reporting requirements, particularly for the Belgian market.
The data model now includes expanded code lists for hazardous substances, as well as a new attribute to capture the physical state of products. This provides greater accuracy in product safety and compliance data and improves communication throughout the supply chain.
New attributes have been added to support price comparison based on fixed units, such as per liter or per kilogram. This functionality improves transparency for retailers and consumers and supports compliance with pricing regulations.
The temporary “Repairability Index” attribute has been replaced by the international “Sustainability Program Code” attribute for the Belgian target market. This change aligns the GS1 Benelux model more closely with international sustainability standards and reporting practices.
Several definitions and instructions related to packaging registration have been clarified to improve Green Score calculations. It is now more clearly defined when values such as “Recycled” and “Bio plastic” may be used, helping organizations avoid inconsistent or incorrect sustainability claims.
Additional GPC bricks have been activated for several new product categories, including:
These additions allow products to be classified more accurately and improve data quality across retail channels and datapools.
The latest GS1 Benelux update reflects the growing importance of high-quality, standardized product data within retail and e-commerce. Sustainability reporting, regulatory compliance, and accurate product classification are becoming increasingly critical for efficient collaboration between suppliers, retailers, marketplaces, and consumers.

Empack 2026 made one thing very clear: getting a grip on packaging data is no longer a nice-to-have, it’s a must.

Implementing a PIM system is a major step toward better product data management. But one critical step is often underestimated: understanding how your current data compares to required standards like GS1. That’s exactly where Qmica makes the difference: before, during, and after your PIM implementation.

Reliable product data is becoming a key foundation for digital commerce and supply chain collaboration. Retailers, marketplaces, and trading partners increasingly expect product information that complies with international standards such as GS1 and ETIM.
